LAGOS, NIGERIA - APRIL 7: Cybercafes run their business using generator on April 7, 2026 in Lagos, Nigeria. Fuel prices have surged as high as 65% in Nigeria, some of the highest increases worldwide since the start of the US-Israeli war in Iran, which has disrupted global fuel supplies with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Despite Nigeria being the largest producer of oil in Africa, the country is facing an energy crisis as it relies heavily on imported crude oil. Much of the country's vast reserves are tied up in oil-backed loans and debt repayment, creating a shortfall for local producers, such as the Dangote mega-refinery. In addition to fuel prices, average Nigerians are beginning to suffer the knock-on effects of the rising cost of food and transportation. (Photo by Temiloluwa Johnson/Getty Images)
