The once popular tabloid Bors has been off the market since last week. The paper's publisher, Mediaworks, announced a reorganization of its portfolio, including the closure of some newspapers. The company is affiliated with the nationalist Fidesz, the former ruling party that was ousted from power in the April 2026 elections. Mediaworks is facing a loss of revenue after the new Tisza government led by Peter Magyar decided to no longer support Fidesz-friendly media with advertising. Before the election in April, then ruling party Fidesz is said to have directly or indirectly controlled about 80 percent of the media market in Hungary, while the press freedom of the few remaining independent media outlets was systematically obstructed by the government.
