This handout photograph, taken and released by Canon EMEA, shows an ultrasound scan of coral oocytes at a developmental stage. The scan was performed by Dr Jamie Craggs, marine biologist and founder of Coral Spawning International, on October 9, 2026, at the Horniman Museum and Gardens in London, as part of a partnership between Coral Spawning International (CSI) and Canon Medical Systems. Researchers were able, for the first time in the world, to identify the formation of eggs inside living corals, allowing them to better anticipate spawning windows that are critical for coral conservation and propagation programmes. This new non-invasive method also eliminates the need to collect or sacrifice specimens for study.
